Newcastle United defender rediscovers top form after injury setbacks and draws interest from Premier League giants
Newcastle United defender Sven Botman is attracting interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, but the Dutch centre-back remains settled and focused on life at St James’ Park.
After two injury-hit campaigns, Botman is rediscovering his best form in Eddie Howe’s side, forming a strong partnership with Malick Thiaw.
Despite his consistent performances, the 24-year-old continues to be overlooked by Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman.
His current contract runs until 2027, and although talks over an extension have yet to begin, Botman is open to discussions.
He currently earns around £90,000 per week, significantly less than top earners such as Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton, and Anthony Gordon, who are on £150,000.
Sources in the Netherlands claim “nothing is happening” regarding contract talks, though this may change as new sporting director Ross Wilson settles into his role.
Newcastle are expected to open talks soon to secure Botman’s long-term future.
Meanwhile, interest from Liverpool and Chelsea continues to build. Liverpool boss Arne Slot reportedly admires Botman’s composure, with the Reds keen to sign a new centre-back after missing out on Marc Guehi.
Chelsea have been long-term admirers but face stiff resistance from Newcastle, who remain in a strong position due to his current deal.
Howe, speaking about player contracts, said ongoing discussions are handled by Wilson and the club board:
“Now we have Ross here, which is great for me. It allows me not to engage in those conversations too often.
Decisions on futures are for a later date; right now, we’re in the thick of the season, and the players have stayed very focused.”
Elsewhere, Brentford are playing hardball over striker Igor Thiago, who has been linked with Newcastle, Tottenham, and Aston Villa after scoring against West Ham and Liverpool.
Brentford, who paid £30 million for the 24-year-old Brazilian, insist he is not for sale but would likely demand a hefty profit should they change their stance.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s Premier League clash with Manchester United has been rescheduled for Boxing Day at 8pm.
The league cited fixture congestion from expanded European competitions but assured fans that there will be more Boxing Day matches next season, with extra recovery time also granted between festive fixtures.
