The 22-year-old striker came close to leaving Newcastle United on summer transfer deadline day after attracting concrete interest from both Aston Villa and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Villa were initially at the front of the queue, but complications caused by UEFA’s financial regulations ultimately prevented Unai Emery’s side from pushing a deal over the line.

With Villa forced to step back, Frankfurt emerged as the leading contenders and were prepared to agree a £30 million transfer for William Osula.

However, talks eventually collapsed when the Bundesliga outfit changed their stance, instead proposing a season-long loan deal that included an option to buy at the end of the campaign.

Newcastle were unwilling to accept those revised terms, and the move fell through.

That breakdown soon appeared to work in Newcastle’s favour. Just a week later, summer signing Yoane Wissa, who arrived for £55 million, suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury while on international duty with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The setback left Eddie Howe short of attacking options and underlined the importance of keeping Osula at the club.

Despite battling an ankle problem of his own, Osula was asked to provide support for club-record £69 million signing Nick Woltemade in attack.

Unfortunately, his injury worsened, and the forward has since been sidelined, missing 11 matches as a result.

However, Osula is now targeting a return in January, and that comeback could come at a different club.

According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the striker has already agreed personal terms with Eintracht Frankfurt, with the two clubs continuing discussions over a potential move.

Posting on X, Plettenberg revealed: “Eintracht Frankfurt and Newcastle are continuing negotiations over a loan deal with a purchase option for William Osula.

The 22-year-old striker wants the move, is in agreement with SGE, and is waiting for the clubs to reach an agreement.”

German outlet Bild previously reported that Osula has also agreed to a five-year contract with Frankfurt, with a proposed salary package worth around €2.5 million (£2.1 million) per year.

Reflecting on how close Osula came to leaving during the summer window, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe admitted that several exit routes were explored.

He explained that a loan move was the club’s preferred solution, as it would have allowed the striker to gain valuable regular playing time while continuing his development.

Howe highlighted Osula’s commitment to improvement, praising his attitude in training and the work he has put in alongside Graeme Jones, including extensive performance analysis and tactical development.

The plan, particularly after Newcastle signed two new strikers, was for Osula to take the next step by playing consistently elsewhere.

While the transfer did not materialise, Howe believes it proved fortunate due to Wissa’s injury, insisting Osula remains a vital part of the squad.

He pointed to the forward’s pace, athleticism, and improved understanding of game management, adding that Osula is now beginning to look like a more complete striker whenever he steps onto the pitch.
