Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario produced a superb save to deny Fulham’s Emile Smith Rowe during Sunday’s clash at Craven Cottage, but despite that moment of quality, he later found himself the subject of unwanted attention online.

The Premier League deleted a social media post featuring Vicario after it drew significant backlash, including from Tottenham themselves.

The clip showed the Italian attempting a free-kick that was launched into an empty area of the pitch, with no teammate making a run to meet it.

The caption read, “Just how the play was drawn up,” while the video itself included the words, “An interesting free-kick from Vicario,” followed by a laughing emoji, “whoops,” and another laughing emoji.

The timing of the post did little to ease tensions among Spurs supporters. Tottenham are enduring a miserable campaign, sitting 16th in the table and still searching for their first league win of 2026.

Since the dismissal of Thomas Frank, interim head coach Igor Tudor has overseen two defeats, deepening concerns around the north London club’s form and direction.

Tudor’s brief tenure has also been marked by controversial refereeing decisions. In the recent defeat to Arsenal, Randal Kolo Muani had a goal ruled out for what was deemed a slight push on Gabriel.

Then at Fulham, Harry Wilson’s goal was allowed to stand despite protests that Raul Jimenez had nudged Radu Dragusin while challenging for the ball. These incidents have left Spurs fans frustrated with what they perceive as inconsistent officiating.

Against that backdrop, the Premier League’s decision to share a light-hearted clip mocking Vicario’s misplaced free-kick struck many as ill-judged.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, the video was viewed close to half a million times by the league’s 45 million followers. It was also reportedly shared on TikTok, where the league has nearly 25 million followers.

The clip appeared to spark a wave of criticism aimed at Vicario, whose distribution has occasionally been questioned since his arrival at Tottenham.

Earlier that same day, the league’s social channels had posted a clip of his miskick from a previous meeting with Fulham, which led to a Wilson goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

While that earlier post was framed as a standard match highlight, the tone of the later video seemed more mocking.

Many supporters and media observers felt the post conflicted with the Premier League’s own messaging around player welfare and mental health.

Tottenham are understood to have contacted the league at multiple levels to express their dissatisfaction, arguing that the competition’s official platforms should not ridicule players or clubs.

By Monday morning, the post had been removed from the Premier League’s accounts. The league has since been approached for comment regarding the decision to publish—and subsequently delete—the video.
