West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo has made bold squad changes since taking over at Rush Green, signaling the start of a new era at the London Stadium.
Among his most notable decisions is the omission of vice-captain James Ward-Prowse, who has not featured in any of Nuno’s matchday squads since his appointment.
This is not the first time Nuno has sidelined Ward-Prowse — he previously cut short the midfielder’s loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season.
Reports now suggest the 30-year-old has been told he can leave in January, with Nuno preferring more physical, dynamic midfielders capable of adding aggression and energy in the center of the park.
Despite Ward-Prowse’s renowned set-piece ability, his style appears incompatible with the Portuguese manager’s system.
West Ham’s recent results have been mixed, with defeats against Tottenham (0–3), Chelsea (1–5), and Arsenal (0–2), alongside a draw with Everton (1–1).
Meanwhile, defender Jean-Clair Todibo has also found himself on uncertain ground. Initially absent due to illness, Nuno confirmed that Todibo trained before the Arsenal match but was still left out of the squad.
Although Aaron Wan-Bissaka returned to the starting XI after recovering, Todibo’s exclusion has sparked speculation that he too could face the manager’s axe if performances don’t improve.
Another major change has come in goal. Mads Hermansen, who started the first four Premier League matches under former boss Graham Potter, has been dropped in favor of Alphonse Areola.
The Danish goalkeeper’s situation has drawn concern from pundits, including former Denmark international Peter Kjaer, who called it a “crying shame” for both Hermansen and his national team prospects.
Kjaer believes the managerial change has disrupted Hermansen’s progress and warned that Nuno, a former goalkeeper himself, is unlikely to rotate his number one anytime soon.
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Hermansen now faces a battle to reclaim his place, while Nuno continues to stamp his authority on a West Ham side undergoing significant transition under his leadership.
