Fabian Schar celebrated a major personal landmark as Newcastle United began 2026 in positive fashion, with the defender marking his 250th appearance for the club by helping secure a convincing victory and a long-awaited clean sheet.

The Magpies opened the new year with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at St James’ Park, courtesy of goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Malick Thiaw.

Schar joined Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018 for a fee of just £3million, a bargain that has proven exceptional value.

Across his 250 appearances, the centre-back has chipped in with 22 goals, many of them memorable, including his stunning strike in the emphatic 4-1 Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Beyond individual moments, Schar has also been central to Newcastle’s recent success.

Proud every single time I walk out in these colours, here’s to many more.”

That closing line has been interpreted by some as a hint that the defender is open to extending his stay on Tyneside.

When he reached 200 appearances in 2024, Schar used a similar phrase before subsequently agreeing a contract extension that runs until 2026.

The Swiss international has previously spoken openly about his affection for the club and the possibility of ending his career at Newcastle.

Speaking last year, he said he would welcome the idea of retiring at St James’ Park, explaining that everything felt right both on and off the pitch.

While he remains eager to continue playing at the highest level for another two or three years, Schar has made it clear he values stability and appreciates what he has found on Tyneside.
