Luke Thomas continues to enjoy the faith of Leicester City manager Marti Cifuentes as he battles to keep his starting spot ahead of Victor Kristiansen.

The left-back endured a challenging afternoon against Millwall last weekend, allowing Femi Azeez to slip past him for the decisive goal while also losing possession in the lead-up to the home side’s missed penalty.

Thomas was substituted just after the hour mark, with Wout Faes taking his place.

Despite that setback, the 23-year-old remains the only outfield player to have started every match in all competitions for City this season—a record he could extend when Leicester host Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Those hoping for Under-21s captain Bade Aluko to be handed an opportunity will have to wait longer, as the teenager is once again featuring for the development squad in their fixture against Manchester City on Friday night.

As it stands, the competition for the left-back position remains a straight fight between Thomas and Kristiansen, though the Danish defender is yet to make a first-team appearance this term.

He has not been named among the substitutes recently, with Cifuentes opting for a more attack-minded bench.

“Victor was injured when I arrived,” Cifuentes explained.

“He missed pre-season due to a muscular issue and then suffered another setback, so he was behind the rest of the group.

That meant Luke was our only natural left-back option, and he started the season well.”

The manager acknowledged Thomas’s off day at Millwall but made it clear that one poor performance hasn’t shaken his confidence in the player.

“Luke knows it wasn’t his best game, but my trust in him remains. He’s committed to the club and has done a lot of good things for us.”

Cifuentes added that Kristiansen’s return to full training has increased competition for places.

However, squad balance often dictates selection: “It’s not easy to have three or four defenders on the bench when you also need attacking options.

Both Luke and Victor give us different qualities, and that’s positive for the team.”

Another defensive decision facing Cifuentes involves the centre-backs. Caleb Okoli started ahead of Wout Faes at Millwall, but the Belgian is expected to return alongside Jannik Vestergaard for Saturday’s encounter.
