Dapo Afolayan, 27, joined his current German club in January 2023 and has since netted 16 goals.
Before his move abroad, he enjoyed a standout spell at Bolton Wanderers, scoring 12 times and assisting four in the 2021/22 League One season, earning the Trotters’ Player of the Season award.
Now, Leicester City are among several clubs monitoring the forward’s situation, with West Bromwich Albion, Blackburn Rovers, and Swansea City also expressing interest.
However, Football League World’s Leicester City fan pundit, Louchlainn Martin, believes head coach Marti Cifuentes should focus on keeping his existing squad intact rather than adding new wingers.
Leicester City set clear stance on Afolayan pursuit
“It worries me that we’re even looking at wingers,” Louchlainn said. “Unless we lose one, we simply don’t need another this season. Losing Abdul Fatawu or Stephy Mavididi this summer would be a disaster.
“There have been rumours linking Fatawu with Everton, but I doubt that will happen—he’d be far too expensive for them.
Coming back from an ACL injury, I think Abdul will remain with us at least until January. Other clubs will likely wait to see how he responds after his recovery before making a move.
“If we were to lose either of them, then yes, bringing in someone like Dapo Afolayan would make sense.
He’s a solid player, but right now, it’s just not on the radar for most Leicester fans. We have other priorities—like signing another striker or possibly a midfielder, especially if Bilal El Khannouss leaves.”
Louchlainn added, “Don’t get me wrong, Afolayan would be a good addition, but with Fatawu, Mavididi, and Kasey McAteer already in the squad, our wide areas are covered.”
Leicester’s fight to keep key wingers
Leicester began their 2025/26 Championship season with a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday, starting with Fatawu, Mavididi, and El Khannouss all in the lineup.
But each of these players has attracted summer interest from other clubs, putting Cifuentes in a challenging position to retain them.
Keeping this attacking trio will be no easy task. Everton, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Serie A side Atalanta have all reportedly shown intent to sign one of them.
As a result, while supporters like Louchlainn would prefer the Foxes to stay with their current options, the reality is that Leicester might be forced into the market if one of their wingers departs.
In that case, targets such as Afolayan could quickly become more relevant, ensuring the squad remains balanced and competitive in wide areas.
For now, though, Leicester’s primary focus appears to be maintaining stability, holding onto their top talents, and addressing other squad needs before considering reinforcements on the flanks.
