David Moyes felt his Everton side performed admirably against Manchester City and perhaps should have capitalised on one of their first-half chances to take the lead.
However, it was Erling Haaland who ultimately made the difference, scoring twice in the second half to secure all three points for Pep Guardiola’s team.
After the match, Phil Foden and Ruben Dias both praised Everton’s performance, admitting that they found the Toffees difficult to play against, particularly before the break.
“It was difficult,” Foden told Premier League Productions. “In the first half, we weren’t really at it. We didn’t move the ball forward quickly enough and struggled to find space between the lines.
The manager spoke about it at half time, and we were much more direct after the break — creating more chances and breaking their lines.”
Dias echoed that sentiment when speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It was a lot of hard work — they made it really tough.
In the first half, we couldn’t properly impose our game. The second half was completely different, and we’re happy to take the three points.”
Moyes will take encouragement from those comments as his team prepares for a crucial run of fixtures.
Everton face Tottenham Hotspur next at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, October 26, and will be eager to preserve their unbeaten record at their new 52,000-seater home.
Following the Spurs clash, Everton travel to Sunderland on November 3 before hosting Fulham on November 8.
Both fixtures will be seen as realistic opportunities to collect valuable points.
A return of at least five points from the next three matches — a win and two draws — would represent a solid outcome and keep their push for European qualification on track.
