Reports from Spain have sensationally claimed that Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen could join Newcastle United on loan in January, but such a move appears highly unlikely.
Newcastle currently have Nick Pope as their first-choice goalkeeper, with Aaron Ramsdale—on loan from Southampton—acting as backup.
Pope’s contract runs until the end of the 2025/26 season, while Ramsdale’s deal includes an option for a permanent transfer.
With two senior goalkeepers already in place, there is no immediate need for another signing in that position.
According to Catalan outlet Sport, Newcastle have made contact with Barcelona about a potential move for Ter Stegen, who underwent back surgery in July and is not expected to return until January 2026.
Other clubs, including Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, have also shown interest in the German international.
Reports suggest that Ter Stegen’s motivation is to secure regular playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup, where he hopes to start for Germany.
However, with Joan Garcia currently the first-choice keeper under Hansi Flick at Barcelona, a loan departure could theoretically appeal to him.
The Catalan media even claimed Newcastle were preparing to “formalise” a loan-to-buy offer in January.
Despite this, there are no credible English reports supporting the rumour.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg also noted that while Ter Stegen hasn’t ruled out leaving Barcelona, his next move remains undecided.
A switch to Newcastle makes little sense for either party. Ter Stegen would not be guaranteed first-team football behind Pope and Ramsdale, which would undermine his World Cup ambitions.
Additionally, his substantial wage of €320,577 per week (£278,903) makes the deal financially implausible, even with the backing of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).
In summary, while Spanish outlets continue to fuel speculation, a January move to Newcastle for Ter Stegen is highly improbable given the club’s current setup, financial prudence, and the player’s career goals.
