SHOCKING! Eagles Pull the Plug

Matt Patricia is once again on the lookout for a new opportunity in the NFL. Despite serving as a senior defensive assistant for the Eagles this season, reports suggest that his time with Philadelphia is concluding, and he is exploring other options for the next season.

According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, Patricia, not being under contract with the Eagles for the upcoming season, intends to be a sought-after candidate for defensive coordinator positions. This might be perceived as a challenge, considering Patricia’s previous struggles with the Patriots last season, where he coordinated the offense, and his difficulties with the Eagles this year.

Patricia recently assumed the role of calling defensive plays for the Eagles, taking over from defensive coordinator Sean Desai. However, the Eagles’ defense did not show improvement, and Patricia faced criticism as his unit faltered in a 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the wild-card round. In that game, the Eagles allowed Baker Mayfield to pass for 337 yards and three touchdowns.

Given Patricia’s recent setbacks, including a disappointing three-year tenure as the head coach of the Detroit Lions with a 13-29-1 record, it appears that his best option may be to follow Bill Belichick, his long-time mentor. Belichick and Patricia share a strong relationship from their 16 seasons together with the Patriots, during which Patricia served as the defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017.

Belichick reportedly considered giving Patricia another chance as New England’s offensive coordinator after a challenging 2022 season, but ownership pressure led him to choose Bill O’Brien for the role. Considering their history, it wouldn’t be surprising if Patricia opts to join Belichick wherever the legendary coach ends up next.
