Everton have made an excellent start to the new campaign, going unbeaten in their last three Premier League fixtures.

Their smart transfer activity has played a big role in this form, with Jack Grealish proving to be a shrewd loan addition and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall impressing following his £25 million move.

Despite those reinforcements, David Moyes may not be entirely satisfied with his squad. Even though the transfer window has officially closed, the manager still has the chance to strengthen further, thanks to two open spots in Everton’s registered Premier League squad.

The Blues submitted a 23-man list, comfortably meeting the league’s homegrown quota, which gives them flexibility to recruit from abroad if needed.

Their deadline-day signing of Merlin Röhl was the final confirmed deal of the window, but the door remains open for free agents.

One area in particular that requires attention is the right side of defence.

Everton failed to secure a natural option in that position, forcing Moyes to rely on centre-back Jake O’Brien, who is being asked to fill an unfamiliar role.

While Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson are still in the squad, both have struggled with injuries, making them unreliable long-term solutions.

The left side of defence also poses concerns. Vitalii Mykolenko is sidelined, Adam Aznou is considered too inexperienced for first-team responsibilities, and there are no clear youth options ready to step up.

Midfield depth was strengthened during the window, and Thierno Barry arrived to provide competition for Beto up front, but defensive reinforcements remain an unfinished task.

Everton have already been linked with potential free-agent and out-of-contract solutions, including former Tottenham full-back Sergio Reguilón and ex-Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Both would fit seamlessly into the squad without breaching regulations, given that the homegrown rule is already satisfied.

For now, Everton’s squad looks competitive, but those two vacant slots leave Moyes with an intriguing decision.

He could choose to fill them immediately to address defensive weaknesses or hold fire until the January transfer window, when more options become available.

Either way, the Toffees appear well placed to build on their positive start, though defensive depth could ultimately determine how far they go this season.
