In an effort to tempt West Ham United into parting ways with Mohammed Kudus, Chelsea proposed a player swap involving Nathaniel Chalobah.

So, when reports surfaced suggesting that Thomas Frank might want to bring Bryan Mbeumo with him to Tottenham Hotspur, former England striker Darren Bent wasn’t the least bit surprised.

With 106 Premier League goals to his name between 2001 and 2013, Bent understands the dynamics at play when managers change clubs.

Frank is widely expected to take over at Tottenham this week, following the highly debated dismissal of Ange Postecoglou.

Although some late interest from North London was speculated upon in the media, Mbeumo still appears on track to join Manchester United.

However, Bent believes emotional ties and established rapport could shift the situation.

“Mbeumo has been brilliant under Thomas Frank. He’s turned into a superstar,” Bent said, referring to the Brentford forward’s impressive 20-goal haul in the 2024/25 Premier League season.

“If Thomas Frank comes to him, I know what he’ll say: ‘You’re heading to Man United, but just look at that club right now.

Come with me—you know how I work, and you’ll play every single week at Spurs.’ That could be enough to change Mbeumo’s mind.”

Bent, in fact, had a somewhat similar choice to make in 2007. He had the opportunity to reunite with his former Charlton Athletic manager, Alan Curbishley, who was then in charge at West Ham.

But instead, he opted for a £16.5 million move to Tottenham.

The decision wasn’t solely about footballing matters. Bent revealed that disagreements with then-West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson were a key factor.

Negotiations broke down, and Magnusson later admitted feeling “surprised” and “disappointed” when Bent signed for Spurs—a sentiment reported by The Standard.

“I had the chance to join Curbs at West Ham,” Bent recalled. “I didn’t go because I didn’t get along with the owner.

I would have loved to play under Curbs again—I had amazing times with him—but it didn’t work out.”

Bent also missed a potential reunion with another former Charlton boss, Alan Pardew, who was managing Newcastle United at the time.

He believes Mbeumo could soon face a similarly tough decision.

“If Thomas Frank gets the job and says to Mbeumo, ‘Come talk to me,’ then Mbeumo has a big choice to make,” Bent said.

Curbishley, reflecting on the failed attempt to bring Bent to Upton Park, admitted that West Ham could have used a striker of his calibre, especially during an injury-hit period that left Carlton Cole as their only fit senior forward.

“In a perfect world, you want four top strikers, which is what Spurs had at the time,” said Curbishley.

“Darren wanted to go there. He thought it was the right move. But had he come to us, he would have played every week.”

Bent later found success at Sunderland, where his career truly took off after struggling for consistent minutes at Tottenham behind the likes of Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe, and Dimitar Berbatov.

“Darren was used to playing every game at Ipswich and Charlton,” Curbishley added. “Hewasn’t used to missing out.”
