Oxford United have won the race to sign former Liverpool defender Ben Davies, beating Championship rivals QPR and Birmingham City to his signature.

According to sources, Davies has accepted Oxford’s contract offer and is now set to undergo a medical before finalising a permanent move.

The 30-year-old enters the final year of his deal with Rangers, who are eager to cash in after deciding he no longer features in their long-term plans.

Davies spent last season on loan at Birmingham City, where he was a regular starter, making 40 appearances in all competitions and playing a vital role in their promotion push.

Despite his consistency, Rangers made it clear that he would not be reintegrated into their squad, prompting interest from several Championship clubs.

Football Insider first reported on 19 August that a number of second-tier sides were in the running for his signature, but Oxford United have acted decisively to seal the deal.

Davies originally joined Rangers in 2022 for £3 million from Liverpool but has struggled to make an impact north of the border.

With Rangers now pushing him out, Oxford manager Gary Rowett has moved quickly to bolster his defence with the experienced centre-back.

Birmingham were close to re-signing Davies earlier this month, but negotiations stalled, opening the door for Oxford to strike.

Having worked successfully under Chris Davies at Birmingham, where he was pivotal in their Championship promotion campaign, the defender will now be tasked with helping Oxford stabilise after a poor start to the new season.

The U’s have lost both of their opening league games and have yet to make a significant financial splash in the transfer market, making Davies’ arrival a notable capture.

Meanwhile, Rangers are continuing their own recruitment drive despite moving Davies on. Transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke has revealed that one of their main targets, West Ham midfielder Andy Irving, could now be available.

The Scotsman is seeking regular football after being pushed down the pecking order last season, managing only a single league start.

Celtic were heavily linked with Irving earlier in the summer, but Rangers are expected to rival them in the race for his signature after he signalled his willingness to leave the London Stadium.
