Rangers are set to kick off the first leg of their two-legged qualifying round tie, with their sights firmly set on securing a spot in the league phase of the competition.

Manager Russell Martin has endured a difficult start to life at Ibrox and is already under pressure following his side’s disappointing draw in their Scottish Premiership opener against Motherwell.

In the aftermath of that result, Martin didn’t hold back in his criticism, publicly calling out his players and indicating that changes are on the horizon.

One of those potential alterations could involve recent signing Oliver Antman being handed a debut.

Martin has so far deployed Kieran Dowell on the right wing, but that experiment appears to have run its course, with Dowell’s performances falling short of expectations.

Up front, the situation is also complicated. Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane have both been linked with moves away, but with limited options available, Dessers may be required to start.

Igamane was left out of the squad entirely against Motherwell, while Dessers came on for the final 30 minutes.

Martin suggested that some of the players whose futures are uncertain may be lacking in professionalism, which has added to his frustration.

Since that match, Mikey Moore and Antman have been brought in. However, Moore, on loan from Tottenham, isn’t eligible yet.

There was initial concern that Antman wouldn’t be available either due to the timing of his transfer, but Martin confirmed during his Monday (4 August) press conference that the club is awaiting UEFA confirmation and there’s a chance he could now feature.

If cleared, Antman could slot in for Dowell, while Dessers may come in for Danilo, who is the subject of a transfer offer.

James Tavernier is set to keep his spot at right-back, while Joe Rothwell, who impressed against Motherwell, will likely start again.

Djeidi Gassama, another bright spark, should also keep his place.

Bigger changes still needed

Martin’s stern criticism of his squad suggests he would prefer to make more sweeping changes, but his current options are limited.

Moore is ineligible, Thelo Aasgaard remains injured, and a new striker has yet to arrive.

Despite a busy summer of incoming transfers, Rangers have not yet offloaded the core group of underperformers from last season. Until that happens, recurring issues may persist.

Martin must also refine his tactics and decision-making if he hopes to guide Rangers into the next stage Of Champions League qualification.
