Earlier in the season, Rangers made the decision to appoint Barry Ferguson as interim head coach following the dismissal of Philippe Clement.

The 56-year-old has spent eight years in charge of the Norwegian side, guiding them to four league titles and building a strong reputation across European football.

His success had attracted interest not only from Rangers but also from English side Leeds United.

However, hopes of luring Knutsen to Glasgow appear to have been dashed following comments from Bodo/Glimt’s technical director, Havard Sakariassen.

Speaking to BBC Sport on 30 April, Sakariassen reflected on the manager’s long-standing connection with the club.

“It’s his eighth year here, so we have been on a long journey together trying to build Bodo/Glimt to what it is today,” he said.

“I know that he enjoys being in Bodo, enjoys working at this club.

He’s probably had some really good offers along the way, and should he, for some reason, decide to do something else, I think we should applaud him to the airport and say thank you.

“But I’m not afraid of that at all. I think that we will work here for more years to come – but who knows?”

Rangers Need to Shift Focus to Other Candidates

Despite Knutsen seeming like a highly desirable appointment, the reality is that he is unlikely to be prised away from Bodo/Glimt at this stage.

Therefore, Rangers would be wise to turn their attention toward alternative candidates, especially as the 49ers enterprise looks to finalise its takeover bid in the coming weeks.

This situation could reopen the door to candidates like Jose Mourinho, who has already expressed interest in the position earlier this year.

Steven Gerrard has also been mentioned as a possible returnee, though his exit to Aston Villa may still divide opinion among fans.

With no shortage of options available, Rangers’ next managerial appointment will be a crucial one — and all eyes will be on who eventually steps in if Knutsen stays put.
