Nathan Patterson’s future at Everton looks increasingly uncertain, with the young right-back yet to play a single competitive minute for the club this season.

During the 2024/25 campaign, he managed only three league starts, and his lack of involvement has fuelled growing speculation about a loan departure before the transfer window closes.

The Scotland international has reportedly been earmarked for a temporary move, as Everton believe a loan spell could provide him with valuable game time and much-needed experience.

Manager David Moyes has consistently overlooked Patterson since pre-season, and his stance may ultimately determine the defender’s next step.

Everton pushing for Sevilla loan

Patterson is widely expected to join Sevilla on loan, with a deal said to be agreed in principle between both clubs.

However, talks have slowed in recent days as the move is dependent on Sevilla selling Juanlu Sanchez. With the deadline looming on Monday night, Everton are eager to resolve the matter quickly to avoid leaving Patterson in limbo.

The 23-year-old has found opportunities hard to come by under Moyes, featuring just six times since the manager’s return to Goodison Park. In fact, he hasn’t even been included in a matchday squad so far this season.

Since his arrival from Rangers in January 2022, Patterson has started just 26 Premier League matches, a disappointing return for a player once considered a long-term solution at right-back.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, former Everton scout Bryan King suggested that a switch to Spain could prove beneficial.

“It would certainly be good for Everton to send him to La Liga and see if he can cope at that level,” King explained. “If he’s only going on loan, he can always be recalled if necessary.

He clearly isn’t high on Moyes’ selection list, so a loan move would give him the chance to prove himself in a very strong league.”

Everton cannot afford to weaken defence further

While Patterson may need a fresh start to reignite his development, Everton also face a dilemma.

The squad is already short of defensive cover, and allowing him to leave without finding a replacement would leave them dangerously stretched.

Moyes has occasionally used Jake O’Brien at right-back, but that move weakens the centre of defence, where numbers are already limited.

For this reason, it seems unwise for the club to sanction Patterson’s exit without lining up another right-sided defender.

The Sevilla opportunity could give Patterson the platform to rebuild confidence and showcase his talent, yet Everton must act prudently.

A deal will only make sense if the club secures adequate depth in defence. Without that, loaning out one of their few natural right-backs would represent a significant gamble.

Patterson’s situation sums up Everton’s broader challenge: balancing short-term squad needs with the long-term development of promising players.
