Leicester City’s hopes of finding a quick fix for their striker struggles have been dealt a blow, as young forward Jake Evans has been called up to represent England at the Under-17s World Cup.

Evans will head to Qatar for the tournament, which kicks off on Monday, November 3, after being named as a late replacement for Tottenham prospect Jun’ai Byfield.

His inclusion means Leicester will have two representatives in the England squad, with midfielder Louis Page also selected.

The 17-year-old has been in outstanding form for the Foxes’ Under-21s, scoring six goals in his last seven appearances.

That prolific run had fuelled hopes among fans that Evans might soon be drafted into Marti Cifuentes’ senior side to address their striking crisis.

After 12 league games, Leicester’s strikers have registered just one goal between Jordan Ayew, Patson Daka, and Julian Carranza — the lowest tally in the Championship.

However, even before his international call-up, Cifuentes appeared to rule out a first-team promotion for Evans in the immediate future.

The City boss praised the teenager’s progress but made it clear that he is being developed with a long-term view.

Cifuentes explained: “We have a lot of faith in Jake, and he’s very much part of our plans for the future.

I’m delighted with his performances — he’s scoring goals and improving in other aspects of his game.

When I talk about strikers, I don’t just focus on goals. What Jake is doing is excellent, but I’m more pleased with his overall development. He’ll be important for us in time.”

England begin their World Cup campaign against Venezuela on Tuesday, November 4, before facing Haiti and Egypt in the group stage.

Should the Young Lions go all the way, Evans and Page could miss up to six Leicester fixtures, starting with this weekend’s home game against Blackburn. The tournament will be broadcast across ITV’s platforms.
