Latest Leicester City Manager Update as Appointment Expected Soon Amid Interest in Gary O'Neil and Chris Wilder
Leicester City are reportedly aiming to appoint a new manager by the end of this week, following the recent departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The Dutchman parted ways with the relegated side over a week ago, and the Foxes have already played their first pre-season match—a 3-1 win over Peterborough United on Saturday.
Speculation has intensified, with Gary O’Neil and Chris Wilder now emerging as leading candidates on Leicester’s shortlist.
According to Telegraph journalist John Percy, other contenders have also held talks with the club, and he stated on X that “Leicester hope to appoint later this week.”
The next manager will be the club’s fourth in just over a year. Enzo Maresca left for Chelsea after guiding the team to promotion, prompting the appointment of Steve Cooper.
When Cooper was dismissed last November, van Nistelrooy was brought in from Manchester United.
Over the weekend, The Sun’s transfer reporter Alan Nixon reported that Chris Wilder had been added to the club’s shortlist.
He noted that the 57-year-old’s agent has strong ties with Leicester, which may have improved his prospects.
Nixon also suggested Sean Dyche was once a leading candidate but might be seen as “too strong a character” for some within the club hierarchy.
However, reports last week indicated that Dyche was not interested in the role.
Gary O’Neil, who left Wolves at the end of last season, remains an available option.
Since their relegation and van Nistelrooy’s departure, the Leicester board has remained relatively silent, releasing only a standard statement regarding the exit.
It’s believed that financial constraints—linked to potential breaches of profit and sustainability rules—have delayed swift managerial action. The club may even face a points deduction for past financial irregularities.
Additionally, their Thai owners, King Power, are reportedly dealing with restructuring and financial matters in Thailand, which may have further delayed key decisions at the club.
