Danny Rohl, a potential managerial candidate for Leicester City, has expressed surprise that the club was relegated immediately after returning to the Premier League.
Rohl, who is expected to leave his role as Sheffield Wednesday manager this summer, has been linked to Leicester as a possible replacement if the club parts ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy ahead of their Championship campaign.
He’s also been mentioned in connection with Southampton, where he previously served as an assistant manager.
Speaking to Kicker, as cited by Sport Witness, Rohl admitted he did not anticipate that Leicester, Southampton, and Ipswich would drop back down to the Championship so quickly, especially given the quality they displayed during promotion and their recent top-flight experience.
“I have to say, it was surprising that all three promoted sides—Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton—went straight back down.
They had brutal quality,” Rohl said. “Particularly Leicester and Southampton, with their long-standing Premier League experience, I didn’t expect them to return to the Championship so soon.”
He pointed to Fulham as an example of how clubs sometimes need multiple attempts before securing Premier League status.
The London club bounced between divisions for several years before finally establishing themselves.
“Fulham also needed two or three years to stay in the Premier League,” Rohl explained. “Of course, relegated teams benefit from parachute payments in the Championship.
Sometimes you must factor in a quick relegation, but then you’ve already built a squad strong enough to come back up again. That gives you a real chance.”
Regarding his future, Rohl hinted at an informal agreement to depart Hillsborough.
The 36-year-old has enjoyed a successful tenure with Sheffield Wednesday, rescuing them from relegation and securing a mid-table finish this season.
“Personally, I had a fantastic time at Sheffield Wednesday,” he said. “I’ve been open about my ambition to work at the highest possible level with top players in the near future.
“My situation at Sheffield is unofficially quite clear.
There’s a mutual understanding with the owner regarding how I see my next steps. Unfortunately, I can’t go into specifics just yet.”
Rohl’s remarks suggest he is ready to take on a bigger challenge, and with vacancies potentially opening at clubs like Leicester and Southampton, his next move could come soon.
