Matheus Cunha may have only signed a new contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers in February, but he’s already being tipped for a summer departure.

Several clubs are reportedly considering triggering his £62.5 million release clause, with interest ramping up as the transfer window approaches.

Newcastle United are among the sides keeping a close eye on the Brazilian forward.

The Daily Mail recently claimed that Eddie Howe’s team have identified Cunha as a “top target,” largely due to his versatility across the front line.

The 25-year-old can operate in multiple attacking roles, which makes him a valuable asset for any squad.

Cunha, who plays alongside Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes for Brazil, has performed consistently since moving to Molineux from Atletico Madrid in January 2023.

He’s registered an impressive 32 goals in 87 appearances for Wolves, underlining his ability to contribute regularly at a high level.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now provided a fresh update on the race for Cunha’s signature.

While Newcastle are among those interested, Romano reports that Manchester United have taken a significant lead in the pursuit.

According to him, the Red Devils have already begun discussing personal terms with the player, and a recent meeting with his representatives reportedly went very well.

“Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves as negotiations are ongoing,” Romano posted on X. “Personal terms are being discussed, as Man Utd are aware of more clubs keen + £62.5m release clause available.

In a later update, Romano elaborated: “The feeling between player side and club side on new meeting was very positive, after project explained and terms discussed.

More meetings will be needed but Man United feel they’re leading the race for Cunha.”

Cunha himself has not been shy about his ambitions. In a previous interview with The Guardian, he made it clear that he sees his future at a higher level.

Although he turned down offers in the past, he emphasized that he’s now ready for a new challenge.

“I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it,” Cunha said. “Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step.

I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

With Newcastle needing a Champions League spot to entice him, and Manchester United chasing European qualification themselves, the race is on.
