Manchester City currently lack a natural left-back in their squad.

While Nico O’Reilly is an attacking midfielder by trade, both Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake—though they have filled in at left-back—are more accustomed to playing as central defenders.

One name that has caught the attention of Manchester City is Rayan Ait-Nouri. Since joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2021, Ait-Nouri has established himself as one of the most consistent and dynamic left-backs in the Premier League.

His technical ability, composure on the ball, and threat going forward have drawn comparisons to former City full-back Joao Cancelo, whose departure to Bayern Munich on loan in January 2023—and eventual exit—has left a void City have yet to fill.

Interestingly, Tottenham Hotspur had also attempted to sign Ait-Nouri, but the Algerian international chose to remain at Wolves.

That decision has proven fruitful, as the 23-year-old continues to enjoy a standout season at Molineux.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, not only by City but also by Arsenal, who have reportedly been monitoring his progress.

Graeme Bailey of TBR Football reports that Manchester City are currently conducting background checks on Ait-Nouri as they assess a potential summer move.

These checks are part of City’s routine due diligence, aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of a player’s personality, work ethic, and character off the pitch. It suggests that the club is seriously considering a formal approach.

The left-back position is a clear area of focus for City heading into the summer transfer window.

In addition to Ait-Nouri, the Premier League champions have maintained a long-standing interest in Andrea Cambiaso.

City held talks with the Juventus defender in January and have kept the lines of communication open since then.

What makes Ait-Nouri particularly attractive is his output this season. For a Wolves side currently sitting in 13th place, he has managed to contribute to 11 goals—scoring four and assisting seven.

Such numbers are impressive for a full-back and underline his potential to add both defensive solidity and attacking impetus.

Importantly for City, Wolves are reportedly open to selling Ait-Nouri at the right price, which is believed to be in the region of £40 million.

This provides a feasible path for Guardiola’s side to secure a much-needed specialist in the role.

Pep Guardiola has openly acknowledged City’s lack of a true left-back. Speaking to HaytersTV last month, he said: “Obviously, Nico’s helping us but he’s not a left-back.

That’s true.” He cited examples of how City have had to adapt over the years by using players like Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabian Delph, and even Rico Lewis in the role.

The manager emphasized the importance of having reliable players who are consistently available, noting that injuries to players like Ake and John Stones have hurt the team.

Guardiola stated, “They cannot perform if they’re not reliable. Which players we have can play every three days? Build the squad for next season from there.”
