Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohl has endured a whirlwind start to life at Ibrox, experiencing highs and lows across his first four matches in charge.
The German tactician has already faced contrasting emotions — suffering a 3-0 defeat to Brann in Europe, winning two consecutive Scottish Premiership games, and narrowly losing a League Cup semi-final in extra time.
Rohl inherited a difficult situation from Russell Martin, who left the club struggling after just five wins in 18 matches across all competitions.
The summer transfer window, overseen by Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell, is now being viewed as particularly poor — with striker Youssef Chermiti and midfielder Joe Rothwell emerging as the standout disappointments.
Chermiti, signed from Everton for £8 million to become Rangers’ most expensive signing since Tore Andre Flo in 2000, has failed to live up to expectations.
The Portugal U21 forward has managed just one goal and one assist in 11 appearances and was heavily criticised by pundit Michael Stewart for his wastefulness in front of goal during the recent Old Firm clash, where he missed two major chances.
Rothwell, meanwhile, joined from Bournemouth amid Martin’s claims that he would bring a “winning mentality” to the midfield.
However, the 30-year-old has struggled to adapt to the pace and physicality of Scottish football, losing over half his ground duels and averaging fewer than one tackle per game.
Recently reduced to an unused substitute in league fixtures, his brief cameo against Celtic drew harsh criticism, with Rangers commentator David Edgar labelling his display “rotten.”
Given his lack of impact both domestically and in Europe, Rothwell no longer appears suited to Rohl’s system.
With limited time to prove his worth, Rangers are expected to offload him in the upcoming January transfer window unless his performances improve drastically.
