Oscar Cortes poised to depart Ibrox on loan before window closes
Rangers secured the signing of Oscar Cortes from Lens during the 2024 winter transfer window, but the Colombian winger has struggled to make an impact in Scotland due to both fitness and form concerns.
Initially brought in on loan, the Ibrox side were obliged to pay £4.5million to make his move permanent.
Despite joining the squad for pre-season training this summer, it has become clear that Cortes’ immediate future lies away from Glasgow, with his loan spell set to run until May 2026.
Rangers have reinforced their attack heavily in recent months, including the addition of Bojan Miovski, which has pushed Cortes further down the pecking order.
Combined with his injury record and the fact that he does not feature in Russell Martin’s current plans, the decision was taken to send him out on loan.
According to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra on 30 August, Cortes is closing in on a switch to Sporting Gijon in Spain.
The 21-year-old is expected to travel this week to finalise the deal, which will keep him at the Segunda División club until the summer of 2026.
Cortes has so far made 21 appearances for Rangers, scoring once and assisting twice. He is under contract at Ibrox until 2029 and has already represented Colombia at Under-23 level.
The move to Gijon offers him a valuable opportunity for regular football in a competition that could better complement his style of play.
With Sporting among the promotion challengers, Cortes will be tested in a competitive environment while also benefitting from the more technical nature of Spanish football.
For Rangers, the hope is that his time in Spain helps him develop into a more polished player ready to contribute upon his return.
If he stays injury-free and continues to grow, he could yet justify his £4.5million transfer fee by 2026, providing Russell Martin with a more mature option to strengthen the squad in their pursuit of domestic success.
The club also sees the loan as a chance to take Cortes away from the pressures of Ibrox, giving him the best possible platform to rebuild confidence and return as a genuine contender for a starting role.
