New York Red Bulls are reportedly interested in signing Timo Werner, currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, for the upcoming MLS season, according to Foot Mercato.
Werner, who is on a loan deal from RB Leipzig with an option to buy, has struggled to secure a regular starting spot under Ange Postecoglou at Spurs this season.
However, for the transfer to happen, both Leipzig and Tottenham would need to agree on terminating his loan contract.
Given the current injury issues at Tottenham, it’s unclear how likely this scenario is.
The German forward has had a challenging time at Tottenham, netting just three goals in 40 appearances since his loan move in January last year.
With Tottenham already short on attacking options—especially after the absence of Dominic Solanke—Werner’s underwhelming output, combined with injury setbacks, could make Spurs more willing to release him to free up space for a new signing.
Tottenham have been actively seeking attacking reinforcements, having previously targeted Randal Kolo Muani before his loan move to Juventus.
Now, they have shifted focus to Lille’s Jonathan David, while also considering other options like Southampton’s Tyler Dibling and Ajax’s Brian Brobbey.
Werner, who earns £200,000 per week including bonuses, reportedly seems open to leaving Spurs, with Foot Mercato stating that he is already in discussions with the Red Bulls about a possible move.
With just 18 months left on his contract at Leipzig, the Red Bulls hope to secure the 28-year-old for a relatively modest fee.
