Russell Martin remains under heavy pressure as Rangers languish in 11th place in the Scottish Premiership.

“Everyone thought Gerrard would go back at one stage, and it might still happen. Who knows what his Saudi deal involves, but Rangers need to make some big calls.”

Gerrard’s Rangers legacy

The Liverpool legend wrote his name into Rangers folklore in 2020/21, guiding the club to their first Premiership title in a decade and famously preventing Celtic from completing 10-in-a-row.

His overall record during more than three years at the helm was impressive: 193 matches managed, 125 victories, 42 draws, 26 defeats, and a win rate of 64.8%. He eventually departed for Aston Villa in November 2021.

Given Rangers’ current crisis, Gerrard’s availability has inevitably reignited speculation of a reunion.

With Martin on the brink, the club may soon require a fresh appointment – and many believe Gerrard is the ideal option.

Why Gerrard makes sense

During his first spell, Gerrard elevated several players to new levels, most notably skipper James Tavernier, who thrived under his leadership. In contrast, Tavernier now looks a shadow of himself, often exposed by Martin’s system.

Gerrard also has a track record of improving attacking talents, having nurtured Ryan Kent and Kemar Roofe.

A return could see him unlock the potential of youngsters like Oliver Antman and Mikey Moore.

Though his managerial career after Rangers has been mixed, there is little doubt he would be welcomed back warmly by the Ibrox faithful.

Right now, fans appear exhausted with Martin’s leadership, and Gerrard’s presence could restore belief and inject much-needed optimism into the club.
