Former Tottenham winger Chris Waddle has exclusively told Football Insider that Spurs have become a “selling club,” casting doubt over their recruitment strategy—especially with the possibility of a managerial change looming.

Tottenham’s transfer activity last summer heavily prioritized youth, bringing in promising teenagers like Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Wilson Odobert, and Min-hyeok Yang.

Although he didn’t support Parker for the role, Waddle focused his criticism on the club’s player acquisition policies.

“Tottenham are a selling club. I’ve said it many times—they don’t hold on to their best talent,” Waddle explained.

“That means you’re constantly searching for young players with promise, hoping they’ll immediately make an impact.

But that hasn’t happened this year. Injuries have exposed the squad, and many of the young players failed to seize their chances.”

He continued, “Tottenham’s infrastructure is top-class—the stadium, the training ground, the fanbase—it’s everything a manager could ask for. But without the financial backing to bring in established, top-level players, it’s difficult.

They won’t sign someone like Matheus Cunha or Alexander Isak. Instead, they’ll target younger players with potential who may be six to eight years away from their peak.”

Waddle also pointed to the club’s inability to deliver success under high-profile managers as evidence of deeper issues.

“They’ve had Mourinho, Conte, and Nuno Espírito Santo—all proven winners.

Mourinho and Conte have lifted trophies across Europe, yet neither could achieve success at Spurs.

Even Nuno exceeded expectations at Forest. So, clearly, the problem isn’t just about who’s in charge—it’s about recruitment and ambition.”

While rival clubs like Liverpool and Manchester City pursue elite talents like Cunha and Isak, Tottenham’s plans remain unclear.

Their pattern of losing top players in their prime has been a long-standing issue.

Stars like Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, and Harry Kane all departed in pursuit of silverware—something they felt was out of reach in North London.

This summer could see history repeat itself. Reports have linked Cristian Romero with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
