West Ham Intensify Striker Search with Multiple Targets Identified by Potter and Macaulay
Since Graham Potter’s arrival at West Ham in January, signing a new striker has been a top priority.
The club’s long-standing struggle to find a reliable forward continues, especially following the underwhelming loan spell of Evan Ferguson, who failed to register a shot on target in five months before returning to Brighton.
Danny Ings has been released, freeing up his hefty £500k-per-month wages, while Michail Antonio’s contract expired, potentially ending his decade-long tenure with the club.
Although he recently featured for Jamaica after recovering from a major car crash, contract renewal talks have reportedly stalled with no official update from either side.
That leaves Niclas Fullkrug as the club’s only senior striker. However, the 32-year-old, plagued by injuries and now deemed a backup option by Potter following a public fallout, could also be on his way out.
Juventus and other Italian clubs are said to be interested in the German international.
To bolster the squad, 19-year-old Daniel Cummings has joined on a free from Celtic. While he will initially train with the U21s, Potter is hopeful he can prove himself during pre-season and earn a senior role.
Potter and head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay are working through an extensive striker shortlist, which includes Evann Guessand, Emanuel Emegha, Mathias Kvistgaarden, and a standout from the Euro U21 tournament.
One long-standing target, Jonathan David, has now slipped through West Ham’s grasp. The Canadian striker was of great interest to Potter, who believed the club could lure him with Premier League football, a key role, and life in London, despite lacking European competition.
David Moyes had previously passed on the chance to sign him for £20 million in 2023.
Potter had hoped to land David and his Lille teammate Angel Gomes on free transfers to revitalise the squad.
West Ham even hosted David’s representatives multiple times in hopes of striking a deal.
However, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed David’s move to Juventus with his signature “here we go,” noting the striker has agreed to personal terms and will undergo a medical soon.
With both David and fellow target Jhon Duran now out of reach, West Ham are set to shift focus towards signing a promising young forward who aligns with Potter’s long-term vision for the club.
