Leicester City manager Marti Cifuentes has explained that midfielder Jordan James was withdrawn during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers due to a back injury he picked up during the match.

James, who had been one of Leicester’s brighter performers in recent weeks, was replaced by Bobby De Cordova-Reid in the 74th minute as the Foxes trailed by two goals.

Blackburn forward Andri Gudjohnsen scored twice — once in each half — to hand Leicester a third consecutive Championship loss and further deepen their growing struggles under Cifuentes.

Earlier in the second half, Cifuentes made a triple substitution, introducing Patson Daka, Jordan Ayew, and Luke Thomas for Julian Carranza, Stephy Mavididi, and Victor Kristiansen.

“I cannot make decisions based on what the fans think because it would be very difficult,” he said.

“JJ had to come off because he was struggling with a lower back problem and was in a lot of pain.

It made no sense to risk him, especially with another game coming up on Tuesday.

“We constantly try to make the best possible decisions. I understand that when it involves a player like JJ, not everyone will agree, but I’m not here to justify every decision I make.”

The defeat leaves Leicester with four losses and four wins from their opening Championship fixtures, a record that has piled early pressure on Cifuentes.

The Foxes now turn their focus to Tuesday’s home clash against Middlesbrough, where they’ll hope to halt their slump.

As the final whistle blew on Saturday, some fans vented their anger further, chanting “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” as the players made their way around the pitch.

Reacting to the hostile atmosphere, Cifuentes urged unity and resilience.

“One bad reaction can easily create a different feeling,” he admitted. “We have to do better, no matter what the fans say.

I completely understand their frustration — results haven’t been good enough — but we need to respond the right way.
