Tottenham Hotspur supporters may have been caught off guard by the latest speculation, but a note of caution remains appropriate.

There are growing and persistent rumours suggesting Spurs winger Brennan Johnson could be on the move in January, with Crystal Palace emerging as a serious suitor.

While no agreement has yet been finalised, the interest is considered genuine and continues to build pace.

Former Tottenham forward Chris Armstrong, who made 141 appearances for the club during the late 1990s, has indicated that discussions between the parties are believed to be at a relatively advanced stage.

That insight has only intensified the belief that a deal, in some form, could materialise.

Spurs are understood to be open to parting ways with the 24-year-old Welsh international if the right offer is presented.

Tottenham would ideally be looking for a figure in the region of £40–50 million, close to the £47.5 million they paid Nottingham Forest for Johnson in 2023.

However, with his role diminishing this season, the club are also willing to consider a loan arrangement, acknowledging that recovering their full outlay may prove challenging.

Head coach Thomas Frank has publicly stated that he remains “happy” with Johnson, but he has also recognised the importance of squad balance and the reality that players want regular minutes on the pitch.

Crystal Palace, led by Oliver Glasner, are actively assessing Johnson as a potential addition and see him as a versatile attacking option who fits their high-energy system.

Palace are keen to strengthen in wide areas, particularly with Ismaila Sarr away at the Africa Cup of Nations and several injury concerns affecting the squad.

Among the clubs monitoring Johnson, Palace are believed to be the furthest along in their pursuit.

Despite playing a key role in Tottenham’s successful 2024/25 campaign, which included scoring the decisive goal in their Europa League final victory, Johnson has started just six Premier League matches this season.

A January move could help him regain momentum ahead of Wales’ upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Given Tottenham’s significant investment, any permanent transfer fee could surpass Palace’s current record signing of Christian Benteke at £32 million.

Away from football, Armstrong’s post-playing life has been troubled.

In July 2016, he was arrested in West Kensington for possession of cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy, later pleading guilty and receiving a fine.

In 2021, he was convicted of criminal damage and assault following an incident at a Tesco store, resulting in a community order and mandatory treatment for substance issues.
