Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed considerable success with their signings from the Championship in recent years.

Now, Spurs appear ready to return to the Championship market once again, with reports suggesting they are keeping close tabs on Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney.

The 23-year-old has been among the most consistent performers in the division over recent seasons, attracting significant attention from Premier League clubs.

Recent updates indicate that Tottenham may face competition for Hackney’s signature from Newcastle United.

According to Football Insider, former Manchester United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown confirmed that Hackney is firmly on Newcastle’s radar.

However, Brown also noted that the player is not entirely convinced about making the move to St James’ Park.

Brown said, “Hackney is a top player and one I rate very highly. A number of clubs have been monitoring him, and Newcastle are certainly one of them.

That said, if he joined them now, he might struggle to break into their current midfield setup, which is quite settled.

Still, he’s the type of player Eddie Howe would want as reliable depth and a long-term prospect.”

He added, “Hackney has great potential and could develop into a key player over time. But whether he’d want to join a team where he’s mainly providing cover rather than starting regularly remains uncertain.

For Newcastle, though, it would make perfect sense.”

Tottenham’s pursuit of Hackney is not new. Reports during the summer transfer window suggested that the club were considering a £25 million move for the midfielder, though no deal materialised.

Hackney remains under contract with Middlesbrough until 2027, giving the Teesside club a strong negotiating position.

While a January transfer is possible, Boro’s current push for promotion — they sit second in the Championship — could complicate matters.

The club are unlikely to sanction the departure of one of their most influential players mid-season unless a substantial offer arrives, leaving Tottenham facing a tough battle to secure his signature.
