Report: Newcastle targeting England international after missed opportunity under Dan Ashworth

During his tenure, he secured several impressive signings, most notably the £63 million acquisition of Alexander Isak, Newcastle’s record transfer.
However, there were also numerous opportunities that slipped through his grasp.
Newcastle’s Interest in Adam Wharton
One significant target that Newcastle failed to land under Ashworth’s leadership was Adam Wharton.
As reported by The Chronicle, Newcastle extensively scouted Wharton during his time at Blackburn Rovers and were strongly linked with a potential deal.
However, instead of moving to Tyneside, he joined Crystal Palace for £22 million. Since then, he has flourished, proving to be a major miss for Newcastle.
Now, there is a possibility of rectifying that mistake.
According to Give Me Sport, Newcastle’s recruitment team is closely monitoring Wharton ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, they are not alone in their interest—Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are also keen on the talented 21-year-old.
Crystal Palace, aware of his rising stock, are prepared to fight to retain their midfield star.
Where Wharton Would Fit at Newcastle
There is no doubt that Wharton would be an excellent addition to Newcastle United.
Many within the club regret not securing him when he was available for a much lower fee.
Palace, however, are now expected to demand a substantial transfer sum. Last summer, they reportedly valued Wharton at £60 million.
If that remains the case in 2025, such a fee would take a major chunk out of Paul Mitchell’s summer budget.
While some believe Wharton would be a worthy investment, his potential role at Newcastle is uncertain.
The Magpies already boast a strong midfield, featuring stars like Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães. Additionally, they have a promising young talent in Lewis Miley.
Wharton thrives in a deeper midfield role, meaning a move for him would likely only make sense if one of Newcastle’s current midfielders departs.
However, this scenario appears unlikely, as reports suggest that Newcastle have no intention of selling key players this summer—even if they fail to secure Champions League qualification.
