Tottenham Appear to Be Shifting Focus Away from Ange Postecoglou
Despite the possibility of Ange Postecoglou leading Tottenham Hotspur to UEFA Europa League success, it appears Daniel Levy has already decided to make a managerial change, with Spurs currently languishing in 16th place in the Premier League.
In a different season—where the teams at the bottom of the table posed more of a threat—Tottenham could have found themselves entangled in a genuine relegation battle.
Such a scenario would have been disastrous for the north London club and seems to have prompted Levy to consider a fresh direction at the helm.
According to German outlet BILD, Tottenham have now entered discussions with Niko Kovac as the search for Postecoglou’s replacement intensifies.
The report indicates that Spurs have made contact with Kovac, who, while associated with Borussia Dortmund, is not firmly entrenched at the club.
Kovac was appointed by Dortmund earlier this year as a temporary replacement for Nuri Sahin. His role was viewed as more of a stopgap measure than a permanent solution.
BILD reports that Kovac’s contract with Dortmund runs only until the end of the 2025/26 season.
Interestingly, his agreement includes terms for an early termination, which would see him receive around £2 million if dismissed before June 2026—suggesting a lack of long-term confidence in his position.
Tottenham reportedly see Kovac as a coach who embodies a “passionate, intense, and aggressive playing philosophy”—traits they believe could translate well to the rigors of Premier League football.
He has previously been described as “world class,” and his approach appears to align with the high-energy style Levy is said to favor.
Crucially, the 53-year-old Kovac is also thought to be personally interested in managing in the Premier League, which could make a potential offer from Spurs all the more appealing.
Kovac is no stranger to Tottenham fans. While managing Bayern Munich, he oversaw one of the most memorable Champions League group stage victories in recent memory—a crushing 7-2 win over Spurs in October 2019.
Serge Gnabry scored four goals in that game, and just a month later, then-manager Mauricio Pochettino was sacked.
Though Kovac’s tenure at Bayern ended in November 2019 following a 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt, his achievements there—along with spells at Eintracht Frankfurt and with the Croatian national team—have earned him recognition across Europe.
Now, in a curious twist of fate, the man partly responsible for ending Pochettino’s era could soon be leading Tottenham into a new chapter, as talks between the two parties begin to take shape.
