West Ham United enter the January transfer window facing numerous uncertainties after a dismal start to the season.
Both former boss Graham Potter and his successor, Nuno Espirito Santo, have struggled to inspire a turnaround.
Potter was sacked following a poor run of form, and Nuno has managed just one point from his opening two games — though those fixtures came against strong opposition in Everton and Arsenal.
The Hammers’ problems have been clear at both ends of the pitch. They have lacked cutting edge in attack and have been far too porous defensively, conceding heavily and slipping to 19th in the Premier League table.
As a result, defensive reinforcements have become an urgent priority ahead of the winter window, and speculation had emerged linking them with a high-profile defensive target.
That target was Manchester United’s Harry Maguire. The England international, once hailed as “outstanding” by national team boss Gareth Southgate, had been on West Ham’s radar since the summer of 2024.
A transfer fee was agreed at the time, but Maguire ultimately rejected the move to the London Stadium.
Recent reports suggested that West Ham could revisit their interest in January 2026, given that Maguire’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season.
However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that the centre-back and Manchester United are in talks over a new contract extension, which would see Maguire continue his seven-year spell at Old Trafford.
According to Romano, discussions have already taken place in recent days, with further meetings planned. United are said to be pleased with Maguire’s leadership and recent performances.
For West Ham, Maguire’s apparent decision to stay put represents a setback in their search for a reliable defensive addition.
The club will now have to explore alternative options in January as they look to stabilise their backline and climb away from the relegation zone.
