Report: Leicester City Now Prioritizing Former Premier League Player as Top Transfer Target

Leicester City faces a challenging task to retain their place in the Premier League after their promotion from the Championship.

Steve Cooper will manage the team at the King Power Stadium next week, taking over from Enzo Maresca, who led them to promotion.

Thus far, Leicester has struggled to significantly bolster their squad during the early months of the transfer window.

While Michael Golding, Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Abdul Fatawu, and Caleb Okoli have joined the club, additional reinforcements are needed.

Leicester is targeting three key positions before the transfer deadline: a new striker, a central midfielder, and an attacking midfielder. However, progress has been slow in securing new players.

The club has looked to the Premier League to strengthen their roster this summer.

Chelsea’s David Fofana has been linked with Leicester, with the Foxes reportedly leading the chase for a loan deal for the Ivorian forward.

On the other hand, Leicester has been unable to pursue Arsenal target Reiss Nelson due to financial constraints.

In addition, former Premier League player Steven Bergwijn is now a primary target for Leicester.

According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, the former Tottenham Hotspur forward is at the top of Cooper’s wishlist.

Leicester is preparing to make an official offer to Ajax for Bergwijn, who is valued at approximately £17 million.

MLS side Atlanta United has also shown interest, recently having an offer of around £13 million rejected.

Bergwijn’s potential addition could provide a much-needed boost to Leicester’s attack. The team has one final pre-season match before their league opener against Tottenham on August 19.

The pre-season has been challenging for Leicester, with recent friendlies ending in losses and failing to score in either match.

Leicester’s struggles in attack have been exacerbated by Jamie Vardy’s injury. Bergwijn’s arrival could offer significant improvements, given his versatility.

At 26, Bergwijn is a natural left-winger but can also play as a center-forward or right winger, providing Cooper with various options.

He has proven his capabilities in the Premier League with Tottenham, where he scored eight goals and provided nine assists despite not being a regular starter.

Additionally, Bergwijn has a solid record with the Netherlands, contributing eight goals and three assists in 35 international appearances.
