According to Sky Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio, Newcastle are now in discussions to sign Juventus defender Nicolò Savona.
This follows confirmation from Sky Sports’ North East reporter Keith Downie, who noted the club’s strong interest in the 22-year-old.
Di Marzio goes further, stating that Newcastle have already opened talks with both Savona and his representatives regarding a possible transfer from Turin to Tyneside.
Juventus are reportedly open to selling several players this summer to fund their own transfer plans, making a move for Savona a realistic possibility, though negotiations remain in the early stages.
Savona offers tactical flexibility
Standing at 6ft 4in, Savona made 28 appearances for Juventus in Serie A last season.
Although predominantly used at right-back, he is believed to be most effective as a right-sided centre-back. His versatility — being able to operate across the defensive line — adds significant appeal.
Eddie Howe has shown a preference for adaptable players, and Savona fits that mould perfectly.
While Newcastle’s immediate priority is finding a long-term successor to Fabian Schar, Savona could also provide vital cover at right-back, where Kieran Trippier is nearing the end of his career at age 35.
Additionally, depth at left-back remains limited beyond Lewis Hall, further increasing the value of signing a player with Savona’s flexibility.
