Rangers forward Rabbi Matondo is nearing a loan move to join Frank Lampard’s Coventry City with an option to buy, as reported by Sky Sports News.
The Welsh international has had a limited role this season due to a hamstring injury sustained early on, which led to his exclusion from Rangers’ European squad for the first half of the season.
This injury has restricted him to just eight appearances in all competitions.
Earlier this month, manager Philippe Clement informed Matondo that he no longer featured in his plans at Ibrox and would be allowed to leave.
It now seems the former Schalke winger has found a new home.
According to Sky Sports News, Matondo is close to securing a move to Coventry on an initial loan deal, which is expected to include an option for the Midlands club to buy him.
The exact terms and fee for the purchase option remain undisclosed.
Since joining Rangers in 2022, Matondo has struggled for consistent playing time due to injuries and a lack of trust from both Michael Beale and Clement.
It now appears his time in Glasgow is coming to an end.
Matondo is likely to be remembered for his dramatic equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Celtic last season, but given the club’s strong attacking options, his departure is unlikely to be a major concern for fans.
With the likes of Ianis Hagi, Nedim Bajrami, Oscar Cortes, Hamza Igamane, Vaclav Cerny, Ross McCausland, Cyriel Dessers, and Danilo ahead of him in the pecking order, Matondo seems better off moving on, despite rumors that some of these players might leave soon.
Matondo could make his debut for Coventry against Watford on Saturday, although a deal has not yet been finalized.
