“Journalist Urges: Rangers Should Sign Shankland if Dessers Departs – ‘Over to You, Nils Koppen'”
Graeme McGarry suggests Lawrence Shankland as a potential winter replacement for Cyriel Dessers at Rangers.
The Herald journalist suggests it would make sense for Rangers to offload Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers before 3 February, as the Scottish Premiership title is beyond reach.
This decision would free up wages and allow the club to bring in a younger forward with potential, or possibly a more affordable, experienced backup option.
One such name mentioned is 29-year-old Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, who could be a cost-effective alternative.
McGarry wrote in the Herald [21 January, pg. 5]: “For all Dessers’ faults, he does know where the net is, even if it often takes him a few attempts to find it. But the league is gone.
“If Rangers can get the 30-year-old off the wage bill in January and bring in a talented young forward on lower wages but with the potential to develop, it would be logical to do so.
“Or, maybe even the likes of Lawrence Shankland, who could fulfil the same role as a shorter-term backup option, but for a lower salary. Over to you, Nils Koppen.
If Dessers does leave, the question then is not only over how the club will replace him, but how will the fans remember him?”
Lawrence Shankland: A Suitable Replacement for Cyriel Dessers
Shankland’s extensive experience in Scottish football could make him an appealing option for Rangers should they decide to bolster their attacking options.
The striker has represented clubs like Aberdeen, Dundee United, and Hearts, thriving at Tynecastle in recent seasons.
This campaign, the Scotland international has made 26 appearances across all competitions, contributing three goals and five assists.
While his numbers aren’t spectacular, Shankland could serve as a reliable backup forward if Dessers departs.
Dessers has struggled for form in recent months but reminded fans of his quality by scoring three goals in Rangers’ 5-0 Scottish Cup win over Fraserburgh.
However, Hamza Igamane and Danilo appear to be ahead of the 30-year-old in manager Philippe Clement’s plans.
Injuries to either player, though, could leave Rangers short on attacking depth.
With sporting director Nils Koppen seemingly focused on younger signings, it remains to be seen if Shankland will catch Rangers’ attention as a viable option to strengthen their squad.
