The visitors took the lead after being awarded a penalty for James Tarkowski’s challenge on Antoine Semenyo.

Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor questioned whether there was an offside in the build-up to the foul.

“I thought there was a hint of offside when the ball was played into Semenyo,” O’Connor said. “Once play went on, though, the challenge from Tarkowski was always going to be a penalty.”

With no VAR in use at this stage of the FA Cup, the referee had to rely on his assistant, who did not flag for the possible offside.

Although Alan Shearer recently praised Jordan Pickford, the Everton goalkeeper was unable to prevent the resulting penalty from finding the net.
