Stefan Borson: West Ham Clear to Sack Lopetegui After ‘Mistake’

Finance expert Stefan Borson has highlighted West Ham’s strong financial position, asserting that the club enjoys “more flexibility than almost anybody else” regarding their finances and Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Manager Julen Lopetegui faces mounting pressure from fans and pundits after the team’s poor start to the 2024-25 season. Appointed only in the off-season, the Spaniard is contracted until June 2026.

Replacing him would require West Ham to pay compensation and negotiate terms with a new manager.

Football Insider reported on 18 November that Jose Mourinho is “very interested” in taking over, adding intrigue to the club’s managerial situation.

According to Borson, the financial benefits from the 2023 sale of Declan Rice continue to bolster West Ham’s accounts, giving them room to maneuver.

Speaking to Football Insider, Borson explained: “West Ham can afford to make this change. Financially, they have more flexibility than most other clubs.

The Rice sale provided significant leeway with PSR, allowing them to spend heavily in the summer while maintaining stability.

Even under the three-year test, they are in a strong position.”

He added, “West Ham are well-managed financially, controlling costs better than many of their London counterparts despite occasional losses.

The cost of parting ways with Lopetegui is manageable and won’t be a deciding factor. The decision will likely hinge on acknowledging a mistake in his appointment.”

With Mourinho reportedly interested, West Ham may face a critical decision that could shape the remainder of their season and beyond.
