Russell Martin already finds himself under pressure at Ibrox after failing to secure a victory in his first three Scottish Premiership matches as Rangers manager.

The Glasgow club also suffered a setback in Europe, falling 3-1 at home to Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie, with the decisive return fixture scheduled for Wednesday, 27 August, in Belgium.

Meanwhile, Old Firm rivals Celtic remain in their own battle to secure a group stage berth, having been held to a goalless draw at home by Kairat in their qualifying campaign.

Huge test for Rangers and Celtic

Stefan Borson, a former Manchester City financial adviser, has spoken exclusively about the scale of the challenge both Scottish giants face.

He explained that Rangers stand to gain a substantial financial boost should they overturn Brugge and progress to the group stage.

Last season, Rangers earned roughly £17 million from their Europa League run, which ended at the quarter-final stage against Athletic Bilbao.

Borson told Football Insider: “For both clubs with Champions League hopes, the planning is difficult because qualification is such a huge factor.

The question is: when do you commit the money? Do you invest early to strengthen and give yourself the best chance of qualifying, or do you hold off until progress is guaranteed?

“My feeling is that eventually one of them will take the gamble. It may be Rangers under their new ownership, deciding to invest heavily at the start of the window to ensure qualification.

The idea would be that once the Champions League spot is secured, the investment pays for itself. But it’s a risky strategic call.

“As it stands, Rangers face an uphill battle, while Celtic probably feel more optimistic.”

Martin’s three-player plan at Ibrox

On the transfer front, Football Insider revealed on 17 August that Martin has prioritised three positions before the 1 September deadline: a striker, a winger, and a centre-back.

Rangers have already been busy, securing a number of permanent additions, including Oscar Cortes, Oliver Antman, Thelo Aasgaard, Emmanuel Fernandez, Djeidi Gassama, Joe Rothwell and Lyall Cameron.

They have also moved into the loan market, bringing in Mikey Moore, Nasser Djiga, Max Aarons, and Jayden Meghoma.

Martin’s reshaping of the squad is ongoing, but with domestic struggles and a Champions League mountain to climb, the manager knows results must follow quickly if he is to win over the Ibrox faithful.
