Manchester United were strongly linked with Everton center-back Jarrad Branthwaite earlier in the summer window, with a £50 million bid rejected by the Toffees in July.
Erik ten Hag’s side subsequently signed Lille center-back Leny Yoro for the same initial fee, successfully fending off interest from several clubs to secure the 18-year-old.
However, The Telegraph reports that United could renew their interest in Branthwaite following the collapse of an attempted takeover of Everton by The Friedkin Group on Friday. Announcing the takeover collapse, Everton stated: “The Friedkin Group will remain a lender to the Club and is proud of playing a key role in enabling the new stadium to be built, which will help ensure a bright future for both Everton and the City of Liverpool.
“Blue Heaven Holdings maintains a positive relationship with The Friedkin Group and would like to thank them for the time and effort they have put into this process.”
Everton has now reportedly informed United of their asking price for Branthwaite, following their previous demand of £70 million. This does not indicate a willingness to sell, as The Athletic claims Everton will categorically not sell the 22-year-old unless United meets their valuation.
Meanwhile, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s priorities seem to have shifted, with United reportedly in advanced talks to sign PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
There are doubts about the future of Victor Lindelof, and although Lisandro Martinez has returned to full fitness following an injury-hit 2023/24 season, United might still decide to re-enter the market if one of their defenders departs.
