Steve Cooper discusses Tom Cannon’s role at Leicester City as transfer window looms

Tom Cannon’s immediate future at Leicester City will depend on the club’s transfer activities in the final 10 days of the window, according to manager Steve Cooper.

Cannon has seen limited playing time during pre-season and was an unused substitute in City’s Premier League opener, despite the club’s injury troubles among its forwards.

In the match against Tottenham on Monday, Cooper mentioned that Jamie Vardy made himself available to play because the team “didn’t have a fit striker,” implying that Cannon was not considered as a starting option.

When Vardy was substituted in the second half of the 1-1 draw, winger Stephy Mavididi was brought on instead, leaving Cannon to remain on the bench.

Interest in Cannon from Championship clubs suggests a loan move could be in the cards if Leicester secures a new striker before the window closes.

Cooper revealed that they were close to finalizing two attacking signings last week, including Czech forward Adam Hlozek, but the deals fell through.

When asked about Cannon’s role this season before the Spurs match, Cooper said: “I can give a clearer answer once we know how the squad shapes up.

Tom is undoubtedly a talented young player with a promising future.

As managers, our job is to field the best team to win games while also ensuring the right development plans are in place for younger players.

“We will do that with Tom. What that looks like right now is uncertain, but he is very much part of today’s plans.

Until anything changes, that’s how it will remain.

However, I’ll be able to provide a more precise answer closer to the end of the window.”

In his debut season with City, Cannon made 16 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals.

However, his opportunities have dwindled since the winter, with the 21-year-old featuring for just 15 minutes in the team’s last 13 competitive matches, dating back to early March.
