West Ham may consider loaning out academy talent Kaelan Casey ahead of the January transfer window, reports Roshane Thomas.
The Athletic reported on 26 December that Julen Lopetegui wants the 20-year-old centre-back to stay with the squad for the 2024/25 season despite interest from EFL clubs during the summer.
However, these plans could change before the January transfer window opens, as the defender may need to secure “much-needed” game time away from the London Stadium.
He has made just one Premier League appearance this season, featuring briefly in the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on 16 December, replacing Aaron Wan-Bissaka in added time.
Kaelan Casey to Leave West Ham United in January?
Kaelan Casey is regarded as a promising talent for West Ham, often compared to club legend Declan Rice [The Guardian, 2021].
In 2023, he impressed during the Hammers’ FA Youth Cup win over Arsenal, earning praise from Declan Rice himself, who described him as “unreal.”
While Lopetegui might intend to integrate Casey into the first team during the second half of the season, regular game time is crucial for his development.
Although training alongside Max Kilman, Konstantinos Mavropanos, and Jean-Clair Todibo is beneficial, nothing can replace consistent minutes on the pitch.
Being on the first-team bench has also limited Casey’s academy appearances this season.
Despite training with senior players, a lack of competitive match experience could hinder his progress.
A loan move to the Championship or League One might offer him the opportunity to gain valuable experience.
If Casey aspires to establish himself at the London Stadium, he needs consistent playing time to realize his potential.
