Newcastle United Still Feeling the Impact of Odysseas Vlachodimos Signing
Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos joined Newcastle United last summer as part of a financial arrangement linked to Elliot Anderson’s £35 million transfer to Nottingham Forest.
That deal was structured to help Newcastle comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), with Vlachodimos arriving for a reported £20 million.
However, his time on Tyneside has not gone as hoped. The 31-year-old has grown increasingly frustrated due to limited playing time, making just a single appearance in his debut season.
Now, with the summer transfer window approaching, Vlachodimos’ future is in question.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle are open to offers for the Greek international but are more likely to pursue a loan move rather than a permanent sale.
A discounted transfer fee could negatively affect Newcastle’s PSR calculations.
Since Vlachodimos signed a five-year contract, the £20 million fee is amortised annually—meaning a premature sale would result in a financial hit on their books.
Ideally, the Magpies would like to recover the full fee paid for Vlachodimos, but that outcome appears unlikely.
As a result, a temporary move seems the most financially viable solution for both club and player.
Newcastle’s goalkeeping department is expected to undergo significant changes ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The club had five senior goalkeepers on the books for the 2024/25 campaign, but departures are imminent.
John Ruddy is poised to leave when his contract expires in June, and Mark Gillespie’s future remains up in the air with his deal also set to run out.
In terms of new additions, Geordie Boot Boys report that Newcastle are targeting Fraser Forster, who is available on a free transfer following his release from Tottenham Hotspur.
Forster, 37, would be a valuable homegrown addition for the club’s Champions League squad.
Additionally, Eddie Howe has identified Burnley’s James Trafford as his primary goalkeeper target.
Howe wants Trafford to arrive this summer and challenge Nick Pope for the starting role.
Considering Vlachodimos’ possible exit alongside other changes, Newcastle’s goalkeeping setup is on course for a comprehensive overhaul.
