Eddie Howe has given the clearest indication yet that Newcastle United plan to be active in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Magpies have now endured three consecutive transfer windows without securing a major signing.

Instead, they’ve focused on player sales to comply with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

To meet the PSR deadline on June 30, Newcastle were forced to offload Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Earlier in January, Miguel Almiron returned to Atlanta United, while Lloyd Kelly was loaned to Juventus with a £20 million obligation to buy at the end of the season.

Despite these departures, which thinned out the squad, Newcastle have achieved notable success.

They ended a 56-year wait for silverware by winning the Carabao Cup and are now just one win away from clinching Champions League qualification for the second time in three seasons.

With the summer window approaching, Howe believes the club is now in a position to strengthen the squad rather than weaken it further.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, Howe said: “Regular and consistent success plays a vital role in showing everyone the ambition of the club.

There’s no question that ambition exists, but our financial ability to compete has been limited by PSR over recent years.

Fortunately, those restrictions won’t apply in the next window. So I see no reason why we can’t add to the squad.”

Howe also touched on the importance of squad depth, adding: “I think we do have depth, though it varies by position.

Our midfield is a good example—when everyone’s fit, we have six top-quality midfielders. That’s a clear strength for us.

“But there are positions where we lack that same depth. Striking the right balance across the squad is crucial.

Having versatile players who can operate in multiple roles is key—someone who can play three positions is incredibly valuable.

“We’ve lost several players over recent windows, so it’s important to assess those gaps and build a well-rounded squad going into next season.”

Who will Newcastle United sign this summer?

Newcastle have already lined up their first addition: 18-year-old Antonio Cordero, who will join on a free transfer when his contract at Malaga expires next month.

However, Cordero won’t immediately feature in Howe’s first-team plans. Instead, the club intends to loan him out to gain experience, with Dutch side Ajax reportedly leading the race. Malaga are also keen to bring him back on loan.

As for senior signings, Newcastle have prioritized three key areas: centre-back, right forward, and goalkeeper.

The club retains interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford—both of whom were targets last summer.

Howe and his recruitment team are now set to move proactively in the market as they prepare for a campaign that could include Champions League football and greater expectations domestically.
