Leicester City endured a nightmare finish to last season, becoming the first Premier League side to lose eight consecutive top-flight matches without scoring.

The disastrous run saw them relegated back to the Championship just a year after winning the second-tier title.

This term, Mart Cifuentes was handed the task of guiding the Foxes forward, and while progress has been steady, consistency remains a challenge.

Leicester currently sit 10th in the Championship after 12 games — the best-placed of the three relegated Premier League clubs.

They’ve collected points in nine matches but have drawn too many, limiting their climb up the table.

Recent defeats to Hull City and Millwall have widened the gap to league leaders Coventry City to 11 points.

With just one win in their last eight league outings, Cifuentes’ men are struggling to find the cutting edge required to mount a serious promotion push.

Despite their mixed form, there has been one major positive for Leicester this season — their handling of Kasey McAteer’s departure.

Ipswich Town, who also returned to the Championship after relegation, signed McAteer from Leicester for £12 million in the summer.

The winger, a product of Leicester’s academy, made 18 Premier League appearances last season and featured twice in the Championship this term before moving to Portman Road.

At the time, the deal was seen as a statement signing for Ipswich, who believed they had landed a promising young attacker from a direct promotion rival.

However, things haven’t gone as planned. McAteer has managed just six league appearances so far and is yet to register a goal or assist.

Competing with the likes of Sindre Egeli, Jaden Philogene, and Jack Clarke for a place on the right flank, he’s found it difficult to break into Kieran McKenna’s side.

Leicester, meanwhile, will feel vindicated. Cashing in £12 million on a player who has yet to make an impact elsewhere represents smart business.

While McAteer still has time to turn things around, the Foxes can take comfort knowing that his absence hasn’t come back to haunt them — at least not yet.
