On July 19, an Italian journalist reported via X that West Ham has identified the French midfielder as a “top target” and has engaged in “direct talks” with both his club and representatives. However, the Saudi Pro League team is reportedly uninterested in selling him, considering the 33-year-old to be a “key player and top professional.”

The Guardian initially reported on July 18 that negotiations were underway for a £20 million deal, with both parties showing a willingness to reach an agreement. It would be surprising if Al-Ittihad were to let Kanté go after just one season, during which he reestablished himself as a contender for France and impressed at Euro 2024.

Al-Ittihad is reportedly paying him £86 million per season [Guardian], indicating they saw him as a valuable investment when they signed him on a free transfer last summer after his contract with Chelsea ended. On the other hand, a £20 million fee for a former free agent in his 30s, after only one season, would be considered a great deal by many clubs.

The decision largely depends on how long both sides believe Kanté can perform at a high level and his overall value to the Saudi PIF off the pitch.
