Montiel, who earns £23k per week, spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest after being allowed to leave Sevilla.
It appears the Spanish club is open to letting him go again.
However, Nuno Espirito Santo will face competition from Dyche and Thelwell.

Should Everton Trust Roman Dixon to Solve Their Right-Back Issues?
After making his senior debut and being thrown into a challenging match against Tottenham Hotspur, Roman Dixon performed admirably under tough conditions, demonstrating potential despite his inexperience.
The 19-year-old’s inclusion in the starting lineup for Saturday’s heavy defeat was a surprise, especially since many fans had been calling for him to be given a chance.
Despite a few moments that showed his lack of experience, Dixon held his ground well against a challenging set of opponents on his flank.
He was tasked not only with keeping Wilson Odobert quiet but also with managing the likes of James Maddison, Destiny Udogie, and Heung-min Son, who frequently drifted to his side of the pitch.
As a highly athletic player, Dixon matched his opponents in speed but sometimes lacked the tactical awareness needed for when to push forward, hold back, commit a foul, or attack.
Nevertheless, he will learn and develop, and it would be refreshing for Everton to see him grow in the right-back position, which has long been problematic for them.
