Blame Hard to Pinpoint, but Nick Pope Faces Criticism
Newcastle’s erratic form makes it hard to single out one player for their struggles. Yet, talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy had harsh words for goalkeeper Nick Pope after the defeat.
The England international, previously praised as “incredible” by Steve Harper, conceded four goals at Brentford, some of which Cundy felt he could have handled better.
“If Newcastle want to be in and around those top European places, I’m not sure he’s good enough,” Cundy told Jamie O’Hara on talkSPORT.
“If they want to move forward, Nick Pope might find himself surplus to requirements.”
Is Nick Pope Still the Right Fit for Newcastle’s Ambitions?
Pope has undoubtedly been a fantastic signing since joining from Burnley, even earning recognition earlier this season as one of the league’s top goalkeepers.
However, lingering concerns about his game persist, particularly his struggles with ball distribution and occasional lapses, such as his role in Crystal Palace’s late goal the week prior.
While Pope remains a valuable asset, Newcastle’s aspirations of competing consistently at the highest level could force them to evaluate whether he is the long-term solution in goal.
As their season continues to falter, difficult decisions may soon be unavoidable.
