Darren Bent says Jarrad Branthwaite must consider his Everton future "with his career in mind."
Bent and Andy Goldstein discussed Jarrad Branthwaite’s situation live on talkSPORT on 2 October, following a report from the Daily Mail on 1 October suggesting that Liverpool could hijack Manchester United’s attempt to sign the Everton centre-back.
Over the summer, Everton rejected multiple bids from Manchester United for Branthwaite, with former takeover candidate John Textor claiming the club would have accepted a £50.6 million (€60 million) offer.
Goldstein asked Bent if Branthwaite would consider a move to Liverpool, to which the former England striker responded, “I don’t think he will, but he has to think career-wise.”
Very few players have represented both Everton and Liverpool, with Nick Barmby and Don Hutchison being among the rare examples.
Liverpool pursued Anthony Gordon earlier this summer after Newcastle United’s financial concerns emerged, but a direct transfer between Everton and Liverpool would undoubtedly be controversial.
At 22, Branthwaite is one of Everton’s most valuable assets, and his absence is keenly felt when he’s unavailable.
Everton’s determination to fend off Manchester United’s advances during the summer was commendable.
Although Branthwaite’s recent injury issues have hindered Sean Dyche’s side, they made him a temporarily less attractive target for other clubs.
Regardless of the financial pressures facing Everton, the club cannot afford to sell Branthwaite to Liverpool.
The Toffees will hope to hold onto their prized defender, as selling him to a city rival would be an unthinkable move.
Everton aims to keep their top asset protected for as long as possible.
